International experts in climate science, ecology, sustainable development, and related disciplines convened at the 2018 Saint Louis Climate Summit, hosted by Saint Louis University as part of its Bicentennial Celebration. It was inspired by Pope Francis’ convocation of leaders to the Vatican in 2014, and the document that emerged to defend of the health and well-being of the planet.

The conference’s co-chair, Peter Raven, Ph.D., and Mary Evelyn Tucker, Ph.D., cofounder and codirector of the Forum on Religion and Ecology at Yale University, discuss how Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si’, provides a clear perspective of how we all must take responsibility for our common home.

Before the Flood Documentary Panel Discussion

Before the Flood, produced by actor Leonardo DiCaprio, explores the topic of climate change, and discovers what must be done today to prevent catastrophic disruption of life on our planet. The screening was followed by a panel discussion featuring students and faculty from Saint Louis University and Washington University in St. Louis.

The Gospel of Creation: Indispensable for Climate of Hope

The theme is also the title of chapter two of Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si, in which he refers to the conviction of believers and the rich contribution that religions can make towards an integral ecology and the full development of humanity.
